Research on hypnosis to quit smoking

A 2012 meta-analysis that reviewed four different studies (in which a total of 273 patients received hypnosis to quit smoking) concluded that it IS worth recommending hypnosis to quit smoking.

Desire to smoke = A conflict between reason and emotion
To smoke is to have a conflict between reason and feeling.
Reason says: “You should stop immediately! Because smoking is dangerous.”
The feeling says: ”Yes, but now I feel like a cigarette!”

And so the feeling wins in 9 cases out of 10. The feeling is deeply programmed into your subconscious and is not so easy to tinker with other than for a short time.

For many others, it may be that they have managed to stop by pure determination. BUT then you start again. Often despite having passed the critical stage of abstinence.
So why do you start again when the withdrawal has worn off!?

Well, because your subconscious wasn’t really on board!

With hypnosis, we synchronize reason and feeling. So that the feeling also says “No thanks! I don’t FEEL like start smoking again!”

Before, I focused mostly on getting people to quit smoking with hypnosis. Nowadays, I spend most of my time trying to get people to not start again once they’ve stopped. It will be much more sustainable in the long term!

Because the truth is that the physiological withdrawal can be different for different people. For some, it’s a few tough days until the withdrawal wears off. For others, that part is easy.

We can support with nutritional medicine to create the best circumstances. But after that, it’s essential not to WANT to start again!

And this is where we will go deeper than many other hypnotherapists and simply work on getting rid of every single reason you have for smoking! Whether you use cigarettes to deal with stress, to socialize or for something else.

The benefits of smoking

Often people talk about smoking as if smoking is only negative. That’s a big lie!
In order to help you in the best way, we need to realize and highlight all the advantages that smoking gives you. You wouldn’t smoke just to fuck yourself, would you?

You may smoke to:

  • handle stress
  • get a moment for yourself
  • suppress anger
  • to reward yourself when you have done something good
  • deal with grief
  • break the ice/connect with new people
  • get a sense of community (smoking with others is a way of socializing)
  • to have something to do if you feel lost in a new environment
  • occupy your hands with something if you feel a little nervous
  • spice up everyday life
  • get to feel a little rebellious and free as a contrast to the ”competence syndrome”.
  • get away from boring tasks/difficult conversations

These connections are programmed into your subconscious. You have once discovered that cigarettes work to affect you in a certain way. And now your subconscious mind is set to e.g. dealing with stress = smoking! Take a break = smoke, and so on.

To help you stop smoking for real, we cannot close our eyes to what positive functions smoking fulfils for you! On the contrary, we highlight them, and then we find new ways to fill the same needs. As well as using hypnosis to unload stress from your body so that you become more harmonious within yourself and do not have the same need for cigarettes.

Smoking to manipulate signalling substances in the brain

There is a reason why you use cigarettes to e.g. deal with stress, influence your emotions and is not a fan of e.g. broccoli. Because the nicotine (as well as sugar, drugs, and alcohol) so effectively manipulates your signalling substances in the brain and thus affects your mood in a way that e.g. a carrot or an apple never quite does it. It affects the reward substance Dopamine and sends out some endorphins and other things.

We can’t close our eyes to that either!

The problem is that this system gets tired easily – you release a lot of substances that are in the system, but you never build up the brain with the cigarettes. When you just stop smoking suddenly without rebuilding your brain, an emptiness easily arises.

That’s why you also get help with targeting nutrients to facilitate the build-up of neurotransmitters to boost the brain to balance itself!

When you come to me, we work on the basis of an overall solution that goes far beyond a few positive suggestions or ”you just have to decide”-gibberish. You can work with hypnosis only as positive suggestions – but I prefer to work broadly, deeply and go in to solve the problem at its root. Otherwise, the risk is that you stop smoking but start to binge on candy or go crazy shopping for clothes or something, when you actually are just stressed, for example.
I want to really help you, not just replace one destructive behaviour with another.

We will therefore strive to:

  • find the positive benefits that smoking gives you
  • find better ways to achieve the same goals
  • let go of the stress that you may be numbing with smoking
  • strengthen your self-image
  • strengthen the nutritional balance in the brain, repair what the cigarettes have done.

A few things to be aware of before booking

You need to WANT to get help to quit smoking yourself. I do not accept clients that want to do hypnosis only because their partner has been nagging them to stop smoking, or people who don’t want to stop at all themselves. There, the basic motivation is far too low. You need to realize YOURSELF that you have a problem.

  • 90% of my clients come 2-3 visits in total. Two visits are minimum.
  • It’s teamwork, we solve the problem together. I’m not doing magic.
  • I never promise results, because what we do is a teamwork, BUT I always do my utmost for us to succeed together, and usually it works out great! 🙂
